Pipe-Major Kirk Johnstone
Montreal's Premier Piper

Nothing perks up the ears or makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up more than the thrilling, haunting sound of the Highland Bagpipes. The shear force and power of the sound is sure to get everyone's attention.
The Scottish bagpipes add dignity and colour to any occasion; whether it be the solemn celebration of a funeral, the revelry of a wedding or the pomp and circumstance of a formal occasion (graduations, award presentations, formal dinners, a Burns night etc.) and even the informal event such as a birthday party.
As Montreal's most experienced and accomplished piper, I would be honoured to perform for you at your special event.

Personal History:

I started playing the pipes as a teenager in 1965.  With more than 45 years of performing at everything from house parties to international ceremonial events, I can safely say that I bring more experience to a performance than any other bagpipe player in Quebec.  Having competed at the highest solo level, and with a Grade 1 pipe band, I also bring the highest level of expertise and competence on the bagpipes than any other player in Quebec.
During the 1970's, I led the Clan Sutherland Pipes & Drums from a Grade 3 competing band to a Grade 2 level.  In 1990 I joined the 401 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve to resurrect their defunct Pipe Band and continued with the R.C.A.F. until 2006 when I transferred to The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada in the position of Pipe-Sergeant.  I remained with the Black Watch until 2010.  During my tenure with the military I achieved the highest performance level (6B) awarded by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Notable Events in my Career:
  • Assumed command of the St. Laurent Pipe Band (which later changed its name to The Clan Sutherland Pipe Band) and led them to numerous awards at the level of Grade 2 - Pipe Band.
  • Performed at Expo 67.
  • Played with the Grade 1 City of Toronto - Caber Feidh - Pipe Band
  • Played for Canadian Championships of Highland Dancing in St. John, NB and Montreal QC.
  • I am a founding (charter) member of the Montreal Highland Games Society.  Currently Chairman of the organizing committee.
  • Joined the Canadian Armed Forces - Royal Canadian Air Force.
  • After 401 Squadron 'stood-down' in 1995, the 401 Squadron Pipes & Drums became the 306 (Maple Leaf) Wing Pipes & Drums of the R.C.A.F. Association.  I continued as Pipe-Major of this new band.
  • Played for the opening of the "Fixed-Link" (the bridge between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island).  Very few people have actually walked on this bridge.
  • Had a 2 month gig at Huis Ten Bosch, Sasebo, Japan along with my wife, Debbie Johnstone and colleague (Graham Batty).
  • Played for the funeral of Michel Trudeau (Pierre Trudeau`s son).
  • Played for a personal family Christmas party for Celine Dion at her private golf club.
  • I was one of the pipers featured in a television documentary titled "They Pipe Among Us".  The program highlighted people from all walks of life that play the pipes.  The series ended with all the pipers gathering in Calgary, AB for the Briar (curling championships).
  • Played in the Princes Street parade, Edinburgh, Scotland, the day of the opening of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
  • Played for the re-dedication of the Vimy War Memorial, Vimy, France, 2007.
  • I have played for the graduation ceremonies at both McGill University and Concordia University for many years.
  • I have been the Ogilvy Piper at Montreal`s Ogilvy`s Department Store for 21 years.

I also teach pipes.  I f you are interested in learning to play the bagpipes, give me a call.  Lessons are free for anyone committing to join the Air Force Association Pipe Band or you can pay for lessons if you just want to learn for your own pleasure.  The 306 (Maple Leaf) Wing Air Force Association pipe band also has instruments to lend.  I have taught hundreds of pipers in Montreal, many of whom now rank among the top players in Canada.

Bagpipes are his life.  He also makes chanter reeds for bagpipes and sells them through Johnstone Highland Supplies; the bagpipe supply company he owns. His wife Debbie Johnstone is also a bagpiper and a kilt maker.  She also perfoms as a wedding piper or funeral piper.  Being a bagpiper for a funeral or a bagpiper for a weeding is an enjoyable passtime.

As a Montreal Piper, Kirk is a professional bagpipe player, or bagpiper as some say, for all occasions,  He can be a bagpiper for a funeral, or a bagpiper for a wedding, or any other function.  There are not really very many bagpiper players in Montreal that are available at any time as a bagpiper for a funeral as ther is typically very little lead time in booking a bagpiper for such an event; such is the nature of a funeral ceremony.  As a bagpiper for a wedding there is always more time to arrange the event. Being a Black Watch piper is not something many pipers can claim.  Being a Black Watch piper is indeed an honor amongst bagpipers.  As a military piper (or bagpiper), we are called upon to play bagpipes for funerals on many occasions.

I am a bagpipe teacher in Montreal, or as some would say a bagpipe instructor.  Bagpipe teacher or bagpipe instructor or piping instructor or bagpipe teacher, all terms mean the same thing.  I give bagpipe lessons in Montreal.  There are a few pipers who give bagipe lessons in Montreal, but I believe I have the most experience.
Bagpipe teacher in Montreal or a bagpipe instructor.  Either way, I teach bagpipes.  There are not many bagpipe teachers in Montreal.  Many potential students find it difficult to find a bagpipe teacher in Montreal.  I need more statements of bagpipe teacher or bagpipe instructor.  Bagpipe teachers and instructors are not plentiful.  If you require a bagpipe teacher, you have found the place I am not a member of the Montreal Pipes & Drums, or Montreal Pipe Band.  Pipers are also popular at birthday parties.  A birthday party can start with a rendition of Happy Birthday on the bagpipes.  For a birthday party, the structure is up to the party givers.
